Willingdon Island is a man-made island located in the city of Kochi (Cochin), in the Indian state of Kerala. It is one of the largest artificial islands in India and has great historical and economic significance. The island is mostly populated by commercial centers like offices, hotels, trading centers, and also serves home to the Kochi Naval Base and the Port of Kochi. It is responsible for linking Kochi with the other seaports of the world. Today, the island handles millions of tones of freight every year.

Creation

Willingdon Island was created during the early 20th century by the British colonial administration by reclaiming land from the backwaters of Kochi. It was carved out of Vembanad Lake and is connected via road and rail. It was named after Lord Willingdon, who was the Viceroy of India at that time. The island was strategically chosen for its location, as it is situated between the natural ports of Kochi and Ernakulam. This location made it a vital hub for trade and commerce.

Port Facilities

Willingdon Island is known for its port facilities, including the Cochin Port, which is one of the major ports in India. The island has docks, wharves, and other infrastructure to handle cargo and facilitate trade.

Commercial and Industrial Hub

Over the years, the island has developed into a significant commercial and industrial center. Willingdon Island is one of the busiest trading centres of Kochi. It spreads over an area of 775 acres. It houses various government offices, hotels, offices of shipping companies, and other businesses.

Connectivity

Willingdon Island is connected to the mainland of Kochi by road and rail bridges, making it easily accessible. The Cochin International Airport is also not far from the island.

Tourism

The island is not just an industrial and commercial hub; it also attracts tourists. Several hotels and resorts have been established on the island, offering scenic views of the backwaters and the Arabian Sea.
