Vellayani Lake, also known as Vellayani Kayal, is a freshwater lake located in the Indian state of Kerala. It is situated in the southern part of Thiruvananthapuram district, the capital city of Kerala. Vellayani Lake is the largest freshwater lake in the Thiruvananthapuram district.

Vellayani Lake is situated about 7 kilometers away from Thiruvananthapuram city center. It is easily accessible by road and is a popular destination for both tourists and locals. College of Agriculture, Vellayani also known as karshika college is the oldest Agriculture college in Kerala under Kerala Agricultural University and situated in Vellayani, Thiruvananthapuram. The campus is 2.52 sq km and bordered on three sides by Vellayani Lake.

A road passes through this lake; a bund has been constructed for this purpose. This lake attracts a lot of tourists. Once in Kovalam, a visitor should not allow to miss the opportunity of seeing this wonder lake of freshwater. Its crystal-clear calm water, especially during moonlit nights, is a craze for the minds. The locals say a side of the lake is Kochu Kovalam, meaning tiny Kovalam

The lake is known for its picturesque beauty, with serene surroundings, lush greenery, and a tranquil atmosphere. It attracts nature lovers and photographers.

The Vellayani Devi Temple, dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, is located on the eastern banks of the lake. The temple hosts the Vellayani Devi Temple Festival, which is a significant religious and cultural event in the region.
