The Tocklai Tea Research Institute is an Indian prime tea research institute for the development of tea and its agricultural practices located in Jorhat, Assam, India. It is the world’s largest and oldest tea research station.
Founded in 1911, Tocklai Tea Research Institute carried out research on all aspects of tea cultivation and processing. After the formation of Tea Research Association in 1964 with the centre at Tocklai, has also further expanded the horizon of tea research. Its regional R&D centre is at Nagrakata, West Bengal.
It carries out and promotes research on tea with the principal objective of improving overall productivity and quality. It is a pioneer in the research and development of tea and an innovator in providing extension services to the tea industry. The ten advisory branches of TRA look after 1100 large tea estates and more than 2,00,000 small tea growers.
