Mittai Theruvu, also known as S.M. Street, is a famous street located in Kozhikode (Calicut). This street is renowned for its vibrant and bustling atmosphere, making it a popular shopping destination for locals and tourists alike.

The history of SM Street dates back to time of the Zamorin when the ruler invited Gujarati sweetmeat makers to set up shop in the city and accommodated their shops just outside the palace walls.

The street is a pedestrian zone. It also has a 160 year old Fire temple amidst shopping places. The fire temple was built in the 18th century when Parsi traders settled in Kozhikode about 200 years ago.

Mittai Theruvu translates to “Sweet Street” in English, and it is aptly named because you can find numerous sweet shops and confectioneries lining the street, selling a wide variety of traditional Kerala sweets and snacks. Some of the popular items you can find here include halwa, banana chips, jaggery-coated fried coconut slices, and many other delicious treats.

In addition to sweet shops, Mittai Theruvu also features a diverse range of shops and stalls selling clothing, jewelry, handicrafts, spices, and other souvenirs. The street is known for its historical and cultural significance and is often bustling with activity, especially during festivals and special occasions.

Visiting Mittai Theruvu is not just about shopping; it’s also an opportunity to experience the vibrant culture and flavors of Kozhikode. It’s a place where you can immerse yourself in the local ambiance, savor traditional Kerala snacks, and shop for unique items to take back as souvenirs.
