Choolannur Pea Fowl Sanctuary is a bird sanctuary located in Chulanur village in Palakkad district of Kerala state, south India. The place where sanctuary is located is locally known as Mayiladumpara which literally means ‘the rock where peacocks dance’. At present (2022) it is the only Pea fowl sanctuary in Kerala. This unique sanctuary is spread over 500 acres of forest area and is an abode of more than 200 peacocks.

When Rajasthan High Court Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma’s remark that peacocks do not mate and that female peacocks conceive from the tears of male peacocks was highly controversial, the number of visitors to the peacock sanctuary increased. The sanctuary, which demands a light trek to get into the forest, along with enchanting landscape views, also offers the sweet murmur of birds and the meow like sound of peacocks. No worries about proper guidance in this area- a guide or a forest official will be there to guide. To get the best views, it is recommended to visit the place during morning and evening, as in the afternoon, under the hot sun, the beautiful creatures might be hidden in the deep forest. Capturing snaps of these conserved, yet aesthetic birds is allowed here. And no worries if your child can really enjoy there, there’s a small park inside the sanctuary for playful activities.

Just after the monsoon season is the best time to visit the Choolanur Peacock Sanctuary. The heavy monsoon in this region makes it difficult for the travelers to explore the bird sanctuary. Anytime from September to May is the most preferable time to visit this region to watch varieties of bird species. The rocky terrain without thick forest makes it convenient for travelers to explore this picnic spot after the monsoon season comfortably.

People can watch so many colorful butterflies if they visit this region just after the monsoon season. Remember to carry a good camera so that you can capture many candid moments of your trip to this enchanting picnic spot in Palakkad. Each traveler to this destination gets enthralled by the beauty of the nature and enjoys the charm of the blossoming plants.
