The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located in the Idukki district of Kerala, India. It is situated in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich biodiversity. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of approximately 90 square kilometers and is known for its diverse flora and fauna. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is an amazing and exclusive thorny forest pervaded with xerophyte species. The sanctuary falls into the rain-shadow area of Western Ghats and is home to the exotic species of Giant Grizzled Squirrel of India whose number is less than 200 in the entire forest region. The appeal of the sanctuary is enhanced by a nearby Sandalwood forest and huge herds of elephants and gaur passing that can be witnessed here by the visitors. The forest provide shelter to such different species as spotted dear, elephants, hanuman langur, sambar and peacocks while an amazing mix of dense vegetation of deciduous forest furnishes an ideal range for trekking.

Location

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the eastern part of the Western Ghats in Kerala, close to the Tamil Nadu border. Its about 230 kilometers from Ernakulam railway station and nearly 204 kilometers from Cochin International Airport is great place to spend some quiet moments in the lap of wildlife and nature.

Biodiversity

The sanctuary is known for its diverse ecosystem, including dry deciduous forests, thorny scrub forests, grasslands, and riparian vegetation. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, tigers, leopards, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer, spotted deer, and many species of birds, reptiles, and insects.

Flora

Chinnar is rich in plant diversity and is known for its unique xerophytic vegetation. Several rare and endemic plant species can be found here, making it a hotspot for botanists and researchers.

Ethnic Communities

The sanctuary is also home to some indigenous tribal communities like the Muthuvan and Malai Muthuvan, who have been living in harmony with the forest for generations.

There are limited accommodation options available near the sanctuary, including government-run eco-friendly cottages and forest guesthouses. It is advisable to make advance reservations if you plan to stay overnight.
