In the tranquil coastal town of Kasaragod in Kerala, lies the historic Chandragiri Fort, an enchanting monument that beautifully merges history, architecture, and the serene beauty of the Arabian Sea. With its rich historical significance and breathtaking vistas, Chandragiri Fort is a place where the past echoes in the present, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Chandragiri Fort would be built in the 17th century by Shivappa Nayak, alongside a chain of other fortresses. This large squarish fort is 150 feet (46 m) above sea level and occupies an area of about seven acres the adjacent to Chandragiri river. Chandragiri Fort was built in the confluence of the Arabian Sea and the Chandragiri River, also known as the Payaswini river.
The fort is managed by the Kerala State Department of Archaeology, with assistance form the Department of Tourism. The Department of Archeology conducted an excavation and uncovered cannonballs made of stone and iron, iron tools, and pottery.
People come here to watch the sunset from the ancient Kizhur Siva Temple at Chandragiri. While the nearby Bekal Fort is a tourist hotbed, those visiting this more serene location will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the lush landscape on display below.
