Nestled in the picturesque district of Kasaragod in the southern state of Kerala, India, lies the serene and spiritually significant Ananthapura Lake Temple. This ancient temple holds a unique place in the hearts of devotees and tourists alike, not only for its architectural beauty but also for its mystical surroundings and the intriguing legend that enshrouds it.

The Legend of Ananthapura Lake Temple

One of the most captivating aspects of the Ananthapura Lake Temple is its fascinating legend. The temple is dedicated to Lord Anantha Padmanabha, a form of Lord Vishnu, and is situated on a small island within a serene lake known as Ananthapura Lake. According to local lore, the temple was originally discovered by a local priest, Divakara Muni, who was a devout devotee of Lord Padmanabha. One day, while meditating on the shores of the lake, he had a vision of Lord Padmanabha.

In the vision, Lord Padmanabha revealed that there was a divine idol submerged in the lake and instructed the priest to retrieve it. He also foretold that the lake would be inhabited by an ancient and wise crocodile, and the priest must take care of it. Following the vision, the priest found the idol, installed it in the temple, and began caring for the crocodile, named Babia, which eventually became an integral part of the temple’s lore.

The Unique Crocodile Connection

What sets Ananthapura Lake Temple apart from other temples is the presence of Babia, the crocodile, which is believed to be over 150 years old. Babia is not only considered a divine entity but also a guardian of the temple. It is said that Babia only consumes the prasadam (offerings) made by devotees and has never harmed anyone. This unique relationship between the crocodile and the temple draws numerous visitors who come to witness this remarkable bond.

Architectural Splendor

Apart from its spiritual significance and the crocodile, the Ananthapura Lake Temple boasts exquisite architectural beauty. The temple is a classic example of traditional Kerala temple architecture with its sloping roofs, intricate wooden carvings, and serene ambiance. The temple’s sanctum sanctorum houses the deity of Lord Padmanabha in a reclining posture on the serpent Ananta (representing eternity) and is a sight to behold for devotees and tourists alike.

A Peaceful Oasis

Surrounded by lush greenery and the tranquil Ananthapura Lake, the temple exudes an aura of serenity and peace. The pristine waters of the lake reflect the temple’s beauty, creating a mesmerizing and enchanting atmosphere. Visitors often find solace in the tranquil surroundings, making it an ideal place for meditation and self-reflection.

Ananthapura Lake Temple holds immense spiritual significance for devotees of Lord Vishnu and Lord Padmanabha. The legend of Lord Padmanabha’s revelation and the presence of the crocodile add a unique and mystical dimension to the temple’s spirituality.
