For those seeking adventure in its most primal form, Kalakkayam Waterfalls in Thiruvananthapuram is the place to visit. These secret waterfalls cannot be visited without traversing through both roads and forest trails. Nestled in the arms of an evergreen forest, only local guides can get you to your final destination since no signboards have been placed around the area.
Kalakkayam also known as Idinjar falls is the part of the Mankayam stream that has its origin at the Agasthyavanam forest. This top tourist attraction is surrounded by an equally picturesque forest, which is great spot for bird watching. A trail along the stream can lead people who like to hike to some really beautiful locales. One has to be cautious while stepping on the rocks to reach the small pools at the bottom of the waterfall as the rocks here are slippery and can take one down in an instant, especially in the monsoon season. For this reason, restrictions to pool entry is imposed during the monsoons.
Once you reach, you’re greeted by a wonderful sight. Mighty waves of clean and ice cold water plummet towards the ground, forming a pool at the base. This pool is famous for its supposed medicinal qualities as well. The entire time you are surrounded by a dense forests and species that haven’t shown up on the mainland for a long time. The waterfall is part of the Mankayam Stream that originates in the Agasthyavanam Forest. Bird watchers and trekking enthusiasts will find their wildest dreams fulfilled here. It is indeed a secret, hidden by natural vegetation for centuries.
Trekking in the forest area surrounding the waterfall is a must thing to do. Apart from it, the site is ideal as a picnic destination as well.
