A traditional Kerala-style house in Malappuram district, Poonthanam Illam was once the home of the legendary poet, Poonthanam Namboothiri. Famous for his masterpiece the Janappana (Song of Knowledge), Poonthanam Namboothiri was a proponent of the Bhakti Movement that gripped the nation. His devotion to Guruvayurappan (Lord Krishna) is well known and the legend has it that the Lord himself approved of his works and overall humility. Today the house is maintained by the Guruvayur Devaswom and is a great reminder of the life and times of a master artisan.

Poonthanam nambudiri was born in1547 at keezhattoor, near perinthalmanna and his marriage was followed by years of childlessness. As a result of fervent prayers a baby boy was born but the child died in a tragic circumstance. Heart broken poet seeks solace at Guruvayur Temple. Lord Krishna appeared in the form of a child to comfort him and become his constant companion. It is believed that Poonthanam left this world in his body.

The Illam has a traditional central courtyard, a common feature in Kerala homes, where various cultural and religious activities took place. The house showcases the architectural elegance of Kerala, with its wooden pillars, ornate carvings, and classic design elements.
